Summer Associate Program

Elliott Greenleaf’s hiring practices focus on former federal and state judicial law clerks. However, each summer, Elliott Greenleaf may welcome exceptional law students who have achieved the highest academic standing to work in our summer program from early June until late July.

Our summer program is purposefully limited, as its goal is to identify students who excel academically and professionally and evaluate their skills and judgments. The size of our summer program allows us to ensure that each summer associate receives individual feedback from our attorneys to enhance the writing and advocacy skills required in Elliott Greenleaf’s practice. In addition to recruiting at local law schools, we also partner with our clients to promote diversity initiatives through summer hiring and to introduce them to the dynamic relationships between our attorneys and our clients’ in-house counsel.

The firm assigns two mentors to each summer associate; the mentors provide the summer associate with advice on writing, advocacy, and practical aspects of working in our offices. The summer associate receives assignments on a variety of litigation, healthcare, business, and regulatory matters representative of the firm’s practice areas. These diverse assignments are intended to introduce the summer associate to our various practice areas. The mentors review the written work product, provide comments, and ensure that feedback is timely and thorough.

The summer associates accompany attorneys to trials, closings, hearings, depositions, conferences, and other judicial proceedings. It is important to us, and to the summer associate, to experience the judgments and presentations made by Elliott Greenleaf’s attorneys in courtrooms and boardrooms.

Meaningful social interaction with the firm’s attorneys and their families is an important part of our summer associate experience. Each year, among other things, the summer associates spend time with the firm’s attorneys, staff, and their families at our annual summer picnic, trips to professional sporting events throughout the region, receptions at the local bar associations, and after-hour functions throughout the summer. The summer associates also play on the firm’s softball team and participate in other events we organize throughout the summer.
