Rafael X. Zahralddin-Aravena Selected to Receive the MJL Excellence in Community Service Award

The Multicultural Judges & Lawyers Section (“MJL”) of the Delaware State Bar Association has announced that Rafael X. Zahralddin will receive this year’s MJL Excellence in Community Service Award. The award will be presented at the Haile L. Alford Memorial Breakfast, which is being held on Monday, May 2nd, 2016 at 8:00 AM at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware.

Mr. Zahralddin founded the Delaware Hispanic Bar Association and served as its first President. He also has held various leadership positions in the Hispanic National Bar Association (“HNBA”), including serving as the HNBA Regional President for Delaware and Pennsylvania, HNBA Vice President of External Affairs, HNBA Deputy General Counsel, and then most recently in 2015 as HNBA General Counsel. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Hispanic Bar Association, where he currently serves as an advisory board member.

He was the chair of the Coalition of Bar Associations of Color (“CBAC”) Advocacy Day in May of 2015, which is part of the CBAC Annual Meeting. In this capacity he organized and led the formal advocacy day on Capitol Hill and met with key administration officials for the combined efforts of the Native American Bar Association, National Bar Association, Hispanic National Bar Association, and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. He has also chaired the HNBA Legislative Day and the HNBA Day of Advocacy with legislators and key administration officials. He currently sits on the HNBA Legislative Affairs Committee as an advisor. These efforts have focused upon fair wages for women, voting rights, immigration reform, judicial pay increases, and diversity in judicial and executive appointments.

He served on the development committee and then as a long time board member of Read Aloud Delaware, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to early literacy efforts. He was also selected as one of the Fifteen Leading Men taking a stand against domestic violence in 2010 during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in honor of the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence Fifteenth year anniversary. He served as the University of Virginia Delaware Club President for several years.

Rafael is a member of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, where his firm is a MCCA affiliate and he was named as one of fifteen 2014 Diversity and The Bar Magazine Rainmakers by the MCCA. He is a 2015 Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (“LCLD”) Fellow. Through the LCLD he has mentored and advocated for multiple women and minority lawyers through the group’s various projects and programs. He is also a former Chair of the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section of the Delaware State Bar Association. He previously served as Vice Chair of the section and as a volunteer for the Multicultural Judges & Lawyers Supplemental Bar Review Course.

Mr. Zahralddin is a member of various professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, Turnaround Management Association, and American Bankruptcy Institute. He has held various leadership positions in those associations. He served as a Fellow of the American Bar Association Business Law Section (formerly known as the Ambassador Program) from 2008 to 2010. He is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (membership in The Fellows is limited to less than one percent of lawyers licensed to practice in each jurisdiction). He is also a National Association of Corporate Directors Governance Fellow. Within the Business Law Section of the ABA he has served on the Diversity and Fellows Committees. He is an AV Preeminent Rated Lawyer by Martindale Hubbell.

Locally he is member of both the Delaware Bankruptcy Inns of Court and the Richard S. Rodney American Inns of Court. He has also coached young athletes from kindergarten to middle school for Wilmington Wings Lacrosse Association and Delaware Rush Soccer Association. He has coached and played rugby for over thirty years, running competitions and supporting local Olympians and youth rugby in the area and nationally.
