Elliott Greenleaf' Dean R. Phillips Provides Multiple Seminars on Appellate Practice to the Pennsylvania Bench & Bar
Elliott Greenleaf' Dean R. Phillips combines an active trial practice and extensive public service to the Bench and Bar. He serves as Chief Counsel to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's Appellate Court Procedural Rules Committee and Orphans' Court Procedural Rules Committee. In addition, his litigation skills resulted in very successful settlements for severely and catastrophically injured persons and their families, as well as in wrongful death and survivor cases.
In addition to his very active practice, Mr. Phillips is a leading expert in Pennsylvania on the Pennsylvania appellate rules and trends in the appellate courts. He addressed the Pennsylvania Conference of Trial Judges at its midwinter 2004 meeting on "What Every Judge Should Know about Appellate Procedure." Mr. Phillips addressed the audience of trial judges, along with President Judge Del Sole of the Superior Court, Lehigh County Common Pleas Judge Wallitsch, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Greenspan and Hon. Robert L. Byer. All Common Pleas Court Judges are members of the Conference and more than 300 Common Pleas Judges from around the Commonwealth attended. Mr. Phillips presented a powerpoint presentation on the following topics: "What Every Trial Judge Should Know about Rule 1925(a) Opinions", "What Every Judge Should Know about Waiver" and a 35 question "Current Developments Quiz" with annotations. He also authored and presented an outline on "Rule 1925(b) statements".
Mr. Phillips also addressed the Orphans' Court Section of the Pennsylvania Trial Judge's Conference at its summer 2003 meeting in Hershey and also gave a presentation to the Pennsylvania Superior Court Judges at their 2003 Heritage Conference.
Mr. Phillips also lectures to Pennsylvania lawyers on appellate issues. He participated as a guest faculty member on February 26, 2004 at a Pennsylvania Bar Institute/Pennsylvania Bar Association sponsored seminar addressing an area of his, and Elliott Greenleaf' particular expertise: "Appellate Advocacy: The Development of a Case in the Appellate Courts." He recently spoke to the Bucks County Bar Association's, Criminal Law Section, on "Current Developments in Criminal Procedure and Appellate Procedure." Mr. Phillips' presentation covered major appellate decisions pertaining to criminal practice and procedure.
A prolific author and lecturer, on March 5, 2004, Mr. Phillips will address the Probate Trust and Real Property Retreat of the Pennsylvania Bar Association in Harrisburg on the topic of "Statewide Orphans' Court Practice, Uniform Forms and E-Filing".
Mr. Phillips also provides significant service to the Courts, including being recently appointed as a Judge Pro Tem by the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Judges Pro Tem hold settlement conferences, and advise the Court on outstanding issues in cases that are near trial. |
